South African Franchisors Spread their Wings

South African Franchisors Spread their Wings

The FASA Franchise Survey, sponsored by Sanlam, shows that South African franchise brands have expanded not only beyond our borders but also overseas, with some brands becoming household names. Most franchisors venture into sub-saharan Africa first, mostly in neighbouring states before venturing further afield.  Those franchisors that do expand overseas choose English speaking countries with the Middle East growing in popularity.

Africa and the world representation by SA Franchisors

Thirty-one percent of the franchisors interviewed claimed to have stores outside of South Africa.  Most of these stores are to be found in the neighbouring countries of Namibia and Botswana. Proximity to neighbouring countries, in comparison to countries further afield in East or West Africa, make them more popular choices for expanding outside of South Africa.

  • 12% of franchisors claim to have businesses outside African borders. This is in line with the number of brands claiming to be international brands.

  • One in eight franchises claimed to be an international brand.
